BPS Perkuat Kerja Sama Statistik Internasional di Sidang OIC-StatCom Jeddah

Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) Republik Indonesiaroft successfully completed a series of diplomatic and technical engagements at the 15th session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Statistical Commission (OIC-StatCom), held in Jeddah, Arab Saudi, on 29–30 September 2026. A BPS delegation led by Deputy Head of BPS Sonny Harry Budiutomo Harmadi attended the two-day session, which was preceded by a side event on 28 September 2026. The forum brought together the heads of 57 National Statistical Office (NSO) from member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OKI), making it one of the largest regular gatherings of official statistical agencies from the Islamic world.

Partisipasi Aktif dalam Forum Statistik OKI

During the Jeddah session, Sonny Harry Budiutomo Harmadi conveyed the Indonesian experience in statistical transformation and delivered several inputs regarding the future direction of statistical development. His presence represented Indonesia's affirmation of the role of national statistical offices as the backbone of evidence-based policymaking, particularly in countries undergoing demographic transition, digital economy expansion, and reform of public data governance.

The agenda of the 15th OIC-StatCom session covered the implementation of the recommendations of the 14th session, the integration of statistical standards across member countries, the adoption of common classifications and frameworks, and the strengthening of official statistics in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Delegations were given the opportunity to present national progress reports, and BPS used the platform to highlight Indonesia's approach to strengthening institutional credibility, coordination with line ministries, and the utilisation of big data in official statistics production.

Beyond the plenary and technical sessions, the BPS delegation also engaged in consultations and dialogue with counterparts from the OIC Secretariat. These discussions emphasised the importance of capacity-building cooperation, data exchange mechanisms, and alignment of statistical methodologies so that figures produced in different member countries can be compared and aggregated without losing accuracy.

Enam Ranah Kerja Sama yang Disepakati

One of the substantive outcomes of the visit was the identification of concrete fields of cooperation with several partner institutions. Six areas were highlighted as priorities for follow-up:

Ruang lingkup kerja sama yang disepakati mencakup: pengembangan statistik halal, penghitungan produk domestic bruto syariah, sinkronisasi data ekspor dan impor untuk perbaikan statistik perdagangan, inisiasi statistik haji dan umrah, serta penyempurnaan metode penghitungan kemiskinan multidimensi.

Each of these fields carries distinct technical implications. The development of halal statistics concerns standards for certification and labelling of goods and services, an area in which Indonesia has accumulated substantial experience through its national halal certification body. The calculation of Islamic gross domestic product, or PDB syariah, requires a common framework so that economic output measured on Sharia-compliant bases can be compared across jurisdictions. The synchronisation of trade data between exporting and importing countries is expected to reduce discrepancies caused by differences in the timing and content of declarations, thereby improving the accuracy of merchandise trade statistics.

The initiative to compile statistics on pilgrimage and Umrah follows the significant growth of Hajj and Umrah travel, which has made movement data on religious tourism increasingly important for national economic measurement. Furthermore, the refinement of multidimensional poverty measurement methods was discussed as a means of presenting a more comprehensive picture of welfare, going beyond income-based indicators to capture access to education, health services, housing, and employment.

Pertemuan Bilateral dengan Mitra Statistik Regional

Sonny was accompanied in the bilateral meetings by representatives of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Jeddah. The BPS delegation held discussions with a number of senior officials, including the President of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), the President of the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) of Saudi Arabia, the Head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) of Egypt, and the management of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

Meetings with TURKSTAT and CAPMAS focused on the exchange of methodological experience and technical assistance, while the engagement with GASTAT addressed cooperation in data standards and the digital modernisation of statistical production. The BPS delegation and the Islamic Development Bank discussed the possibility of supporting statistical capacity programmes for member countries, particularly in the fields of data quality assessment and institutional development.

Penguatan Ekosistem Data Nasional dan Internasional

BPS affirmed that the cooperation agenda resulting from the 15th OIC-StatCom session will be followed up through a series of technical meetings and scheduled activities, as part of the follow-up to the decisions made in Jeddah. The results of the bilateral meetings are expected to be formalised in the form of cooperation documents or memoranda of understanding in the coming period.

The OIC-StatCom session is held regularly as part of the statistical cooperation framework of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. For BPS, participation in the forum is regarded as an important instrument for expanding international statistical cooperation, supporting the transfer of knowledge, and ensuring that Indonesia's official statistics are recognised as a reference for other member countries in the region.

With the completion of the session in Jeddah, BPS has extended its cooperation network to a wider group of national statistical offices, strengthening the foundation for the development of official statistics and the national data ecosystem both at home and abroad.
